Christ Center Lodge Gets New Roof!

skyroofersThe first week of November brought with it beautifulCIAM sunny skies and perfect roofing weather. The Wolf family of Bellvue, CO shared their time and talents as they put a new steel roof onto the 26-year old Christ Center Lodge. Jeff's son and daughter, Grant and Bridget, were roofcampers in the late 1980's at Sky Ranch, so this was more than a project, it was a reunion. In addition, Kent Garvin, owner of Colorado Iron and Metal of Fort Collins, Colorado provided the steel for the roof that will help keep the lodge protected and dry for decades to come.

THANK YOU Jeff, Grant, Bridget and Kent!

Waste Water Treatment Facility Goes Underground!

digSRC Enterprises of Eagle, Colorado was on site in early November also to begin the installation of the long awaited $450,000 Water Treatment System at Sky Ranch. This first stage of work included the installation of the 2,000 gallon Ultra Violet Dosing Tank and layout of the sand filter. The system, designed for high altitude/lower oxygen environments, will tank1filter and treat all the waste in the Sky Ranch so the final product is clean water. The system will make Sky Ranch "Greener" and allow the use of the facility to have a smaller impact on the sub-alpine tundra that surrounds Sky Ranch. We are looking forward to completing the fundraising for the system and moving on to the new Bathrooms for the site!

Outdoor Chapel Remodel Completed!

The Sky Ranch Outdoor chapel was in desperate need of repair, so L Double R Board members, Pastor Paul Judson and Steve bockBock along with Herb Hergott and other members of First Lutheran Church in Longmont, Colorado came to the rescue. In the Fall of 2006, Pastor Paul mobilized a group of high school students and their parents to come up in the snow and get rid of all the old benches and log steps that had rotted away due to years of use. Later in the Spring of 2007, Steve and Julie Bock, who own Prestige Landscape in Longmont, dontated time, equipment and materials to get the job done. Throughout 2007, work was done to completely terrace the hillside to prevent errosion on the slope. New half log benches, built out of trees from the nearby Lodgepole Family Campground were installed and sealed. After the new entrance path and altar were completed, wood chips were brought in to finish the project. The members of First Lutheran Church dedicated the new chapel during their family camp in August. We are so blessed to have a congregation that will put this time and effort into a project like this. Thank you so much to Pastor Paul, Steve, Julie, Herb and all the other members and volunteers.

The new Sky Ranch Outdoor Chapel is proof that the church is more than just a building, it is the people too! When you get a chance to worship next at the Outdoor Chapel, take a moment to say thank you to the members of First Lutheran Church in Longmont, Colorado.

Backpack Center Deck Ready for Hikers!

When Jim and Jean Vosberg brought up their grandchild to camp this past summer, they mentioned that they have some retired friends who like to build things. Little did they know that we like friends like that too! After some coffee and conversation, Jim organized a group of volunteers from Zion Lutheran Church in Loveland, Colorado to come up and put a new deck on the entrance to the Golden Nugget Lodge. Originally built in the early 1900's, Tom Bennett used this lodge to house his guests. For the last 44 years, the facility has been used by the guests and staff of Sky Ranch as a dining hall and, more recently, as a base for the High Wilderness Backpack program. The "Backpack Center" gets a lot of traffic. Each week in the summer every camper gets ready for their day hike or overnight trip in this building. Before a step is taken towards the trail, the hiking groups gather in front of the building for last minute orientation and a prayer. The deck will provide a place for that to happen. It will also provide on-site campers, adult sponsors and retreat groups a place to gather for basket weaving, singing, and watching the sun go down over Comanche Peak. The deck will also provide a spot to have coffee with the next group of volunteers interested in making ministry happen at Sky Ranch.
