Fritz White

Fritz White has long been known and recognized for his imaginative approach to sculpting. His art is considered "innovative, tough, sentimental, outrageous." Inspired by the spirit of the "persevering American," White strives to capture that spirit in his bronzes. Born in Ohio, White came to the West while working in the publishing industry and after having been a commercial artist in the Midwest. His life-long interest in fine art, particularly sculpture, was stimulated by the environment, and he worked diligently to develop this skill. He completed his first sculpture in 1962, and after a decade of experimenting, was elected to the Cowboy Artists of America. He has generously shared his talents with others, participating in numerous educational sessions with young artists and sponsoring sculpture classes for the visually handicapped. White has many pieces of monumental sculpture installed throughout the United States. He lives in Loveland, Colorado.

When asked to comment on western art, White stated: "I see western art as that which is peculiar to the exploration and development of the American continent. It is only an accident that it was first presented as cowboy or Indian in content. I feel that artists who portrayed the life and story of the conquistadors, Pilgrims, and the Revolutionary and Civil Wars are western artists. It falls into its own category because the subject matter and/or historical sagas were completely different and new to the world of art. Like the pioneering American, it stands or falls on its own individual merit, not on the word of promoters." Fritz White is a member of the National Sculpture Society.
